Course Syllabus

Welcome to Concept and Creative Thinking!  This is a second tier studio course created to assist students to analyze artistic concepts and use them in new and creative ways.  Students will learn to look at things in a new and innovative light, how to “think outside of the box”.



Course Content:
  • Unit 1- What is Creativity?
  • Unit 2- Scale: Modeling and the Creative Thinking Process
  • Unit 3- Ordinary to Extraordinary: Investigating Concepts
  • Unit 4- Movement: Defining the Problem
  • Unit 5- Metamorphosis: Implementing the Idea
  • Unit 6- Real World Applications of the Creative Thinking Process
  • Unit 7- Revisiting the Implemented Idea: Evaluation, Revision, and Further




Course Requirements and Grading:
  • Class Notebook
  • In-class exercises, handouts, and notes
  • Homework assignments

  • In-class Studio/ Research Assignment
  • Studio and research projects will be completed for each concept discussed in class.

  • Final Concept Projects
  • At the completion of each unit you will be required to create an original art project that deals with that concept.
  • Each final project must include: brainstorming, research, preliminary sketches and/or models, and an artist statement.
  • There will be a class critique for each final project.

  • It is important to check the blog (vanaukencct.blogspot.com) frequently for the following:
    • material presented when you are absent
    • copies of PowerPoints and worksheets
    • inspiration
    • fun sites, activities, and artists/artwork to check out
